On My Mind Monday: New Year Do-Over

How are everyone’s New Year goals going? Anyone feeling the need for a do-over? I had such good intentions at the start of this new year. I made some goals that I felt were inspired and needed. I actually started out the first week of January right on track. But then the second week came as a whirlwind and it hasn’t slowed down a bit. We have had lots of company, which I LOVE and am so grateful. But of course I stayed up too late visiting and put things on hold that I otherwise would have been doing. We have also had a ton of rain and I know this sounds dumb, but it […]

10 Sweet Picture Books for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day was never a big deal to me. In fact, in high school my friends and I started a tradition of wearing black on this holiday, whether or not we actually had a Valentine. This tradition continued through college and basically until I had kids. Having kids just makes every holiday fun, especially if that holiday is all about giving lots of snuggles and love and kisses. These sweet books will make you feel extra lovey, and snuggling while reading them is definitely a must. Enjoy! A String of Hearts by Laura Malone Elliott – This is such a sweet story of a bear trying to write the perfect card for a special friend. […]

My List of Favorites at Disneyland and California Adventure

Last year our family got annual passes to Disneyland for Christmas. This past Monday we made our last visit to this magical place before the passes expire. I’m not going to lie, I almost cried walking down Main Street holding hands with my oldest son as we made our way out of the park that night. Disneyland really is amazing and I have loved getting to spend so much time there this past year. We created so many wonderful memories together and I feel like I just want to savor these Disney memories as long as possible! Since my brain still wants to be all about Disneyland, today I would like to share with you some of my favorites at Disneyland and California Adventure. […]

Life Lessons from an Unkempt Yard

Weeding Things Out of My Life

This morning as I was pulling weeds (I wasn’t exaggerating the amount of yardwork we have.), I couldn’t help but draw a parallel between the work I was doing and my life in general. Overall, our front yard is really nice. We have a decent amount of grass, which can be rare in Arizona landscaping. We have four large trees and several flowering (depending on the season) bushes. But right now, the yard is overrun with fallen leaves and abundant weeds, thanks to the unusual amount of rain we’ve had lately and our lack of upkeep. It is hard to see the beauty when there is so much that needs to be cleaned […]

Showing Love and Connecting with your Children

Connecting with your children

Does anyone else feel like your kids are growing up way too fast? My oldest son turned 10 last week and it seems like just yesterday we became a family of three. For almost three years it was just my little buddy and me. We had so many fun adventures together and he was the recipient of all my undivided attention. Fast forward several years and we are now a family of five. With each new addition I have been amazed at how much more love I feel. But I have also felt a bit of guilt that I don’t always have as much time as I would like to show that love to […]

Books on My Nightstand

Normally, I just read one book at a time. I like to get totally immersed in one story before trying to find the brain space for another story. The library didn’t cooperate with me this month, though. I had four books come off the hold list at the same time. Now I feel like I have to read them all at once before they’re due in 3 weeks. This is what’s stacked up on my nightstand right now: The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale – I planned to read this in about a week, but I often struggle with nonfiction. This seems like a really great book, but it’s one that will […]

On My Monday Monday: House Projects

We bought our home about 2 1/2 years ago and within hours of closing, the house looked like the picture above! We had high ambitions for our new little house and although we were not exactly sure what we were doing, we jumped right in. The first year in our home was filled with projects such as tearing out part of a wall, painting the kitchen cabinets, and creating some custom built-ins. It was exhausting doing most of these things ourselves with young kids but oh was it worth it! Here are a couple of before and after pics of some of our work… I’m sure any homeowner will agree that the list of […]

10 Simple Ways to Enjoy Outdoor Playtime

10 Simple Ways to Enjoy Outdoor Play Time

If you follow us on Instagram (@citrusandsandals), then you probably know that 80% of my posts are of my kids playing outside. This winter has been seriously wonderful! I always say that summer is my favorite season because I love swimming and trips to the beach. But I have been absolutely loving winter this year and have been spending a lot of time outside with my girls. My oldest daughter is somewhat of a homebody. She is content to stay inside and play, read, and craft all day every day. Sometimes it is a challenge to get her excited to be active and go out in the sunshine. I have to be creative and make […]

A Fitness Series: My Favorite Exercise DVDs

The other night, my husband and boys went to watch that awesomely insane college football championship game with some friends. So, after I got my daughter to bed, I decided to get in a quick workout at home. I will often just put together or follow a circuit to do on my own at home, but sometimes I really just want someone else there to tell me what to do. Exercise DVDs are such a great option for when you can’t leave your house but still want to get some good exercise. Whether you have little ones keeping you home, the weather keeping you home, or you just don’t want to leave home, […]

On My Mind Monday: A Mom’s Birthday Wish List

Let’s talk birthday stuff, shall we? My 30th birthday (!!) is on Saturday, so why not celebrate all week? And by celebrate, I mean write blog posts about my birthday because my week looks pretty ordinary. Whenever it was my mom’s birthday, she would always say that all she wanted was a clean house and obedient children. I remember thinking how boring that was! Didn’t she want something cool? Well, guess what?! When my mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, I answered, “Someone to clean my house!” While I doubt I will be having a maid anytime soon, here are a few other household-related things I wouldn’t mind getting for my […]
